why breathe

Friendly advise told me: “you need a blog, you need a blog, blog, blog, blog.” So here it is. I hope you like it. But if you don’t, that’s fine too.

First off, I’d like to thank Justin Seeley for mentoring me through the dark foreboding recesses of web infrastructure and blog integration (that even sounds geeky). He is my Guru and Savior. I’d also like to thank Kelly Householder for teaching me to believe in myself when others don’t, and to look deep to find the good in others. And of course, thank you Susan Brass for not throwing me out years ago.

And why breathe as a blog title?

It’s life; the basic root instinct that we all have in common—human, animal, environmental. We all consume the qualities to sustain ourselves and then release what we don’t need. It’s part of the rhythmic order of life. In our world there’s so little we have in common, and yet we all share the need to breathe. If you’re breathing, you’re living.

(Sorry, went off on a tangent there)

I also love the definition on Breathe as to take in the aroma of something; like a great pot of soup with all the ingredients blending together in orchestration, to fashion a pleasing aroma to the palette.

(Uh, let’s make that relevant)

That speaks so much to photography—assessing the beauty and capturing it. But aromas can also be pungent. Often, the most unapproachable images are the most powerful and therefore necessary to create change.

Another definition for breathe refers to slow down, to take a rest. I love cross-country biking; fast speeds, hairpin turns. But it’s only when I stop for a “breather” do I actually take in the environment around me. This is so true in photography; to take in a moment and make it last. Catch a breath.

(But I’m a shooter, not a writer)

So there you have it. I breathe. I eat. I capture life (animate, inanimate), to savor the moment and make it last.

Hopefully, future post will be more about the images and less about trying to give definition to what I do. Although, I’d love it if this develops into something that does help us all define life and discover important simple truths in capturing a richer quality of life.

(Whoa Nellie, that’s way too deep)

Thanks for slowing down and taking a moment to take in the, (excrement deleted) I’ve laid out here. And like my friend Tim at Redneck Wine says, “ You gotta let it breathe”.
